Migraine pain is unique for everyone. That’s why our approach begins with a conversation about how your migraines affect you. After discussing your migraine history, we’ll focus on identifying and treating the points most directly tied to your pain—what we call “landmark points.”
Step 1: Mapping Out the Pain
Our practitioner will guide you in pointing out the spots where your pain is most intense. For some, this is around the temples, the sides of the head, or behind the ears; others may feel it radiating down toward the neck or even have symptoms in the forehead and brow. Each of these areas holds clues for creating your customized treatment plan.
Step 2: Locating the Landmark Points
To understand your specific tension points, the practitioner will use gloved fingers to gently examine these areas. This step identifies tight bands of tissue beneath the skin where adhesions may be causing pain. Once a tender spot is found, the practitioner marks it with a washable pen—these marks tell us exactly where to focus.
Common landmark points include:
Head and Neck Areas: Temples, behind and in front of the ears, TMJ (jaw area), the base of the head, and along the neck muscles.
Forehead Areas (for pain around the brows): Crown of the head and just above the eyebrows.
Shoulder and Upper Body: Shoulder blades, upper back, and arm muscles, especially if migraine pain radiates down.
Step 3: The Injection Treatment
Once we’ve mapped out the pain points, we’re ready to start treatment. PerryWork migraine therapy involves targeted injections at these landmark points, typically up to 14 per session. This careful limit reduces the risk of “flu-like” symptoms, a temporary effect that can happen when the body releases toxins as part of the healing process.
Our initial focus is on your most disruptive symptoms, especially any visual distortions, as this provides the most immediate relief.
The treatment process follows these steps:
Preparation: Each area is carefully cleaned to prevent infection using soap, alcohol, and Betadine.
Injection: A precise mix of saline and a mild anesthetic (and sometimes a small amount of steroid, depending on medical history) is injected at each marked spot. As the injection eases the tension at the adhesion, you may notice some release or “tenting” of the tissue—a sign that the area is ready to heal.
Immediate Results: You may see an improvement in swelling around the injection site and an overall release of tension in the area.
Post-Treatment Care: We’ll massage the injected areas to increase circulation and apply surgical tape to each point. At home, ice and rest are recommended to allow your body to fully absorb the treatment.
Supporting Your Recovery
Once the injections are complete, we’ll gently massage the treated areas to stimulate circulation, helping your body to relax and encouraging natural healing. Surgical tape is then applied to each injection site to provide protection and support as the treated areas settle. At home, we recommend using ice packs and allowing time for rest to maximize the treatment’s effectiveness.
Looking Ahead: What to Expect After Treatment
After your session, you might experience an immediate reduction in pain or tension, with some patients feeling a noticeable lightness or improvement within hours. Over the next few days, it’s common to feel gradually increased relief, as the PerryWork Method targets the root of your migraine pain by releasing tension and promoting circulation. For some, this relief may last several weeks or even months before another session is needed.
Our goal is to help you experience lasting migraine relief so you can return to your daily life with greater comfort and fewer interruptions. If you have any questions or concerns following your treatment, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
